June 2013

Hats off to all Mayfly anglers who this year despite the difficult weather conditions went fishing and actually had some nice catches of beautiful brown trout. Interestingly, Oughterard Bay fished very well over the month, which enabled anglers to fish and catch in windy conditions

Jim O Sullivan, Cork who is a veteran Mayfly enthusiast caught 5 trout of total weight 12lbs over a 3 day period in the first week of May. He had 2 cracking fish of 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 lbs. His perseverance paid off.

Throughout the month most of the fish were caught using wet Mayfly. Keith Bentley, UK, caught 5 trout, all around the 1 1/2lb mark. Brain Emslie and Patrick Walker both keen Dappers caught and returned 7 fish the best being 2 1/2lb

The annual return of “Johnny Macs”  Welsh anglers who epitomise the true Mayfly angler arrived in the 2nd week of May, Richard Morris had 15 fish, returning 14, the best being 3 1/2lb. Tony Crocker caught 17 trout, using a red ribbed Mayfly, returning all. Alan Evans fishing with Olive Dabblers caught 14 trout, returning 12.

By the 3rd week of May Dapping had finally got going with good hatches of Mayfly in certain pockets. Stephen Taylor- Winter, N Ireland had 14 trout with the best being 2 1/2lbs, all on the Dap and  retured all

Usually the Mayfly bush in bloom signifies the peak of the Mayfly, this has just occurred and so we expect the Mayfly fishing to continue well into June. Temperatures have finally risen and the evening on spent gnat is now the quarry of the trout. With lovely long June evenings with us now it is a great way to unwind and experience some great fun chasing feeding trout.
